On October 26, 2008 Taurus Education was delighted to welcome Wesleyan University Associate Dean of Admission, Terri Overton, during her one stop to China. At the Shanghai Library, Terri delivered a comprehensive presentation on Wesleyan University's resources to a lecture room full of parents and students. After the introductory topics, her presentation advised on the merit-based scholarship available to international students applying from China. In addition to the Freeman Asian Scholars Program and the criteria for scholarship, Terri recounted the Freeman legacy to the interest of those in attendance. Other information included topics ranging from Wesleyan's high academic standards to housing options. Taurus's very own Jeff Thompson remarked about an appealing housing option, wood frame houses purchased and maintained by the University, for upperclassmen. After the presentation, James, an alumnus from Wesleyan was present to discuss his time at the University and beyond. The articulate delivery of James's passion for his Wesleyan experience and how it affected his life added a unique dimension to the session. A few quotable quotes include remarks on the difference between Wesleyan students and others. "We value an exchange of ideas, not a comparison of accomplishments."
Moreover, students learned that the Wesleyan experience is about "looking for a purpose, not a job." With a focus on dialogue as engagement, Wesleyan students are able to apply their skills across multiple industries. An East Asian Studies major, James described how he was able to obtain a paid internship working alongside medical students as an undergrad, and then a full time position after receiving his Bachelor's that originally required candidates to have an MBA degree. James's story about how he wove his Wesleyan experience in interviews to help him land those key career opportunities proved to everyone present that there is no merit in the attitude, "I have no experience, I might as well not try."
