Barnard College Symposium in Beijing

On March 19, 2009, Taurus Education attended The Kang Tongbi Commemorative Symposium: Women Changing China, held by Barnard College at the Park Hyatt in Beijing to honor the legacy of Kang Tongbi, one of China's early reformers for women's rights, and the first Chinese woman to attend Barnard a century ago. Barnard President Debora Spar served as moderator for a distinguished panel of prominent women leaders in China, who shared their expriences and insights with a captive audience of students and educators. Among the panelists included television anchor and media mogul Yang Lan, renowned women¡¯s rights advocate Wu Qing, acclaimed novelist and screenwriter Yan Geling, and Academy Award-winning filmmaker Ruby Yang.

¡°Our panelists demonstrate the remarkable roles that women now play in all facets of Chinese life, and the importance of continuing to educate women everywhere,¡± said Barnard College President Debora Spar. ¡°Women leaders shape societies. Now more than ever, we need to inspire young women to think expansively and courageously about the impact they can have on the world.¡±

Established in 1889, Barnard College is a historic women¡¯s college in New York City and one of the Seven Sister Colleges. On behalf of Barnard College, Taurus extended invitations to local high school headmasters and teachers to help promote this groundbreaking event. In Beijing, Taurus co-founder Brian Ong was also able to discuss further cooperation with Barnard College, in support of the college to build a broader impact and higher reputation in China.
